Breech Loader: Loaded from the rear. Two of the most commonly used pieces were the 12-pound Napoleon, a smoothbore bronze muzzle-loader, and the 10-pound iron Parrott Rifle, one of the first true rifled guns.

One of the dangers of serving in the artillery is working around caissons and limbers full of extra gunpowder and artillery shells, which are prone to explode when struck by enemy rounds.

Because of the day’s technology, artillery is generally limited to firing at targets the gunners could see, something known as “direct” fire. Early in the war, however, Union hot-air balloons are occasionally used to spot Confederate targets. They share the information by using signal flags to the gunners below—an example of “indirect” fire.
